This collection contains records and correspondence generated by the Confederate Department of Henrico concerning Union and Confederate prisoners held in Richmond, Va. The correspondence, 1862-1864, consists of letters to and from Confederate military and political officials regarding the disposition of individual cases, and the receipt and transfer of prisoners. Also included are lists of prisoners incarcerated at Castle Thunder, Belle Isle, and Libby Prison in Richmond, orders, petitions for prisoner release, accounts, and discharges. Correspondents in the collection include John Henry Winder (1800-1865), James Alexander Seddon (1815-1880), Samuel Cooper (1798-1876), Isaac Howell Carrington (1827-1887), Elias Griswold, George W. Alexander, and other Confederate officers.
